Our Story

Chapul was founded in 2012 by college roommates, Pat and Dan. The company was inspired by Pat’s career in agricultural water use, and the shared vision to create a food product that contained a sustainable, and healthy protein source. Chapul cricket bars are an all-natural energy bar that contain a protein powder derived from cricket flour, a very water and land resource-efficient complete protein, containing all of the essential amino acids.

Chapul’s first product, the world’s first cricket bar, was launched with a successful Kickstarter campaign in June 2012 with supporters from 13 countries. Since then, Chapul has received international press as the world’s top innovator in insect protein on sources such as CCTV, New York Times, Forbes, The New Scientist, and several national and international news channels. In March 2014, Chapul won the NEXTY Award as the most innovative food product in the United States, leading the natural foods industry towards health and sustainability. Later that year, Chapul’s founder and CEO appeared on the hit television show Shark Tank, with a viewership of over 6 million. On the show, Pat secured an investment from billionaire and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, Mark Cuban.

Today, Chapul has four flavors of it’s gourmet energy bars, inspired by different regions of the world that incorporate insects into their diet, including the Central Mexico inspired Aztec Bar with dark chocolate, coffee, and cayenne chili, the Native American inspired Chaco Bar (peanut butter and chocolate), the Thailand inspired Thai Bar (coconut, ginger, lime), and the Japanese inspired Matcha Bar (matcha green tea, sesame seed, banana.) The bars are located at premium health and natural food stores primarily in the United States and Canada.

Today the Chapul team consists of a group of passionate innovators, dedicated to creating the best-tasting, and healthiest product available. Our introduction of insect-protein into mainstream Western culture has been widely accepted by individuals who crave a healthy and sustainable food product to eat while on a solo adventure, or with family and friends.
